The surnames of Andhra Kshatriyas were created or formed during the 12th, 13th and 14th Centuries (AD). Prior to that, there were only Gotras (clans) but no surnames. Marriage alliances were being made between persons of different Gotras but not with persons of the same Gotras. At the time of formation of surnames, the villages where persons were residing generally became their surnames.
From the data collected by Sri Buddharaju Varahala Raju, there were 109 surnames for Andhra Kshatriyas. 80 surnames were based on village names; 20 were based on Chivalry names; 1 based on nature and 8 based on other ways. For some families the names of their famous and prominent ancestors became their surnames. For example - Sayyapa Raju, Bhupathi Raju, Byrraju, Ganapathi Raju, Gadi Raju, Gokaraju, Kunappa Raju, Nallappa Raju, Rudra Raju, Uddaraju, Yarakaraju (Yarakaraju/Yerukaraju, Yeruka meansWell Known in telugu) etc. The surname based on nature - Sardhaka namam (One who is rightous) - is Sagi.
Gotra (clan), Vamsam means heredity. The Vamsams are of two types:
- Janma Vamsam (based on Birth)
- Vidya Vamsam (based on Education)
Those Kshatriyas who were educated under certain Sages (Rishis) became their Vamsiyas. They belong to the respective Vidya Vamsams.
Sage Apastamba wrote a book named Apastamba Sutramulu incorporating the traditions of persons wearing the sacred thread (Dvija). All the traditions and ceremonies of Andhra Kshatriyas are based on these sutras. The Andhra Kshatriyas belonging to the five Gotras
- Kasyapa
- Koundinya
- Dhananjaya
- Vasistha
- Pasupati
have marriage alliances with the persons belonging to the other three Gothras. As Vasistha was the educational guru of both Koundinya and Vasistha Gotras, he is considered as the Pithru (Father) of both of them and so there were no marriage alliances between these two Gotras. However, for the last few centuries they discarded this tradition.
Most surnames in Andhra Pradesh come from the family's town of origin so some of the surnames are found in other Andhra communities. Some of the Kshatriya names are actually the same but due to regional pronunciation differences they are spelt differently.

ReplyDeleteVery few surnames among the Telugu Kshatriyas ( Rajus) are seen in two gothras.
DeleteThis could be because two gothra families settled in a same village, such village name became surname of both the gothri Rajus. Ex. Vetukuri , Chekuri are seen in both Vashishta and Dhananjaya gothras.
Similarly Saagi Raju/ Sagi Raju, Bairraju, Gadiraju surnames also seen in both the gothras. These surnames are not village names, might be a forefather/ a king's name emerged as surname, means two principals of these two different gothra Rajus from where these surnames emerged might be of the same name.
Mudunuri/Mudundi, Jampana surnames are seen in both Dhananjaya and Koundinyasa gothras. Dhananjaya gothra Jampana surname Rajus are known as 'Kota Jamapana ', the Koundinya gothra Rajus are known as 'Varnata Jampana'.
Rajus ( Telugu speaking Kshatriyas) have four gothras viz. Vashshta,Dhananjaya,Kashyapa and Kaundinya.
All these gothras have Royal lineage viz. Parichedi, Dharani Kota/ Kota, Kakatiya and Varnata Dynasties.
Circar District and Kalingandhra district Rajus have the above mentioned four gothras.
The Rajapalayam Rajus ( who migrated to southern Tamil Nadu 300/400 years back) also have the same surnames and gothras of these Circar district Rajus, but 2-3 additional surnames within this four gothra fold are also seen in Rajapalayam ).
Rajus ( i.e Telugu speaking Kshatriyas) of Chitotor district, Nellore district and Rayalaseema ( they are seen mostly in Nellore district, Chittoor district and Rly. Koduru & Rajampeta of Kadapa YSR district ; also seen in Tiruvallur, Tiruttani Taluks of Tamil Nadu) have four gothras only viz. Vashishta, Dhananjaya,Kashyapa and Pashupathi.
This Pashupathi gothra could be synonym of Kaundinaya gothra
The Kshayapa gotra is in short called as Kashi/Kasi gothra.
Surnames of Nellore district and Rayalaseema Rajus are different from that of Circar district Rajus, however all these are in this four gothra fold only. But some surnames like Sagiraju, Keerthipati, Konduru/ Konduri , Rudraraju, Gadiraju, pathapati, Samanthapudi, Madiraju ...are common among the Circar districts and Nellore/Rayalaseema Rajus
( Kshatriyas). Several Telugu Kshatriya families from Chittoor and Nellore district settled in around Bangalore and Chennai cities.

Rudra's earliest inscription is from Bezwada date A.D.1201 mentioning him as the brother-in-law (marundi) of Ganapati of the Kakatiyas. His next inscription also from Bezwada dated A.D.1205 mentiones him as Natavadi Rudra, and his father Budhaaraja. Rudra's inscription from Tripurantakam dated A.D.1209 is issued in the reign of Ganapati of the Kakatiyas. The Telugu Kshatriyas (Rajus) have Rishi Gothras,Rishi Pravaras and also Raja Pravaras ( which indicate/describe their Royal lineage).Rishi Pravara indicates to which Rishi ( Sage) disciples they have been.

Vashishta, Dhananjaya, Pashupathi and Kashyapa. The ' Pashupathi' Gothra which is seen among the Rayalaseema and Nellore Rajus could be synonym of Koundinya Gothra . 'Surname' plays important role in Telugus' culture. Surname and Gothra both are equally important. Because some surnames are common in all the castes and in some cases Gothras are also common.
But usually Gothra and Surname combination of a caste person need not be the same of other caste person.

Deleteనేను గోదావరి జిల్లాలో ఉన్న రాజుల చరిత్ర చూశాను కానీ దానిలో సరైన ఆధారాలు చాలా వరకు లేవు.. వాళ్లు ఆధారంగా ఆంధ్ర రత్నాకరం అనే బుక్ రిఫరెన్స్ గా పెడతారు ఆ బుక్ కూడా రాసింది వాళ్లకు కులస్తుడే. మీరు చాళుక్యుల నుంచి కాకతీయ నుండి వచ్చారు అని అంటారు.కానీ చరిత్రలోకి వెళ్లి చూస్తే కాకతీయులు దూర్జయ కులానికి చెందిన వారి... ఇది అందరికీ తెలిసిందే. కానీ గోదావరి జిల్లాలో ఉన్న రాజులకి కాకతీయులకి ఎటువంటి సంబంధం ఉందో చరిత్రకారులే చెప్పాలి. మా ఊరిలో భట్ట రాజుల కులస్తులు దాదాపుగా 150 కుటుంబాలు పైనే ఉంటాయి. వారు ఎక్కువగా రాయలసీమలో ఉన్న రాజన్న మాత్రమే చేసుకుంటారు. గోదావరి జిల్లాలో సంబంధం వచ్చిన ఎక్కువగా తిరస్కరిస్తూ ఉంటారు. రాయలసీమ రాజుల్లో ఉండే గోత్రాలు పశుపతి ఆత్రేయస భరద్వాజ వంటి గోత్రాలు ఉంటాయి. భట్ట రాజులు దక్షిణ భారతదేశంలో వచ్చిన తర్వాత వారిలో కొంతమంది క్షత్రియతత్వం మరికొందరు బ్రాహ్మణతత్వంపై మొగ్గు చూపారు. అందుకే వీళ్ళు రెండు ఆచారాలను పాటిస్తారు. ఇంకా ఏమైనా సందేశాలు ఉంటే అడగండి.

ReplyDeleteI am Kumar Varma. My Surname is Srinandharaju. We are Kshatriyas belonging to Suryavamsham. My Gothram is Aathreyasa and it is also known as Aathreya. Basically we are from Anagondi of erst while Karnataka state and our forefathers migrated to Andhra Pradesh and our families were settled settled in Khammam Dist. and also in some parts of East and West Godavari, Krishna districts, 100 years back. we have nearly 400 to 500 families spread over in different districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Sir, the main problem is that our Surname or our Gothram is not in the list as maintained by you. Due to absence of that, we have been finding much difficulties while finding alliances for our sons and daughters. Therefore, I would like to request you to kindly arrange to enroll my Surname Srinadharaju and my Gothram Aathreya in Kshatria site of Andhra Pradesh, we would be ever grateful to you Sir.
I would also request you to kindly let me know what sort of formalities to be fulfilled for enrolling our Surnames and Gothram.
